Over 60 states and territories are contaminated by landmines, cluster munitions, unexploded and abandoned explosive ordnance. Many regions also face risks of accidental explosions and illicit diversion from poorly managed ammunition stockpiles. The use of antipersonnel mines has caused widespread contamination globally.

Join us as we reignite our #TogetherAgainstMines campaign across social media channels throughout the month of April. We firmly believe that by working together, we can achieve remarkable progress in the mine action sector. That's why we're inviting individuals and organisations like yours to participate and share your stories of togetherness with us.

Here's how you can get involved:

  • Get Inspired: Reflect on your experiences and memories related to mine action. Was there a significant accomplishment you achieved with your peers? Do you have a story about a mentor who inspired you, or perhaps you've mentored someone yourself?
  • Guiding Questions: If you're unsure where to start, we've provided some guiding questions to help you craft your story. Choose one that resonates with you and share your thoughts with the world.
  • Share your #TogetherAgainstMines Story: Create your post – a short tweet with a picture? A longer memory on Facebook or LinkedIn? Whatever you decide, share your stories and pictures on your preferred social media platform using the hashtag #TogetherAgainstMines. Don’t forget to include a picture to accompany your story.
  • Spread the Word: Tag your colleagues, friends, and share across your networks to encourage others participate. The more voices we have united in this cause, the greater impact we can make. Together, we can make a difference.

  • "Since I was young, my core value has always been about having a sense of purpose.

I was twenty-four years old when I was hired by the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC to work in a role that was split between communications and mine action. For the latter area, I was hired by Ben Lark to work with him in the Weapon Contamination Unit. As part of the implementation of the new ICRC weapon contamination strategy — which aimed to extend beyond landmines — Ben sent me on my first mission to Sri Lanka.

In the Eastern District of Batticaloa, I was going to find out if I would sink or swim. I only ever tried to focus on doing my best and didn’t think about the next steps in my career. It was really about the sense of purpose, being part of something greater towards bringing back humanity at a time where you felt humanity had vanished. Ben trusted me to do this. When someone trusts you fully, you hold a precious responsibility to honor that trust and you feel ownership.

Later, Ben encouraged me to develop and suggested I do Explosive Ordnance Disposal training. For the different phases of your life, you need someone who sees you and gives you the chance to grab hold of those first experiences allowing you to broaden your network, learn and take on challenges. Ben gave me access to discover the mine action world and he’s been my mentor ever since. Since then, I've tried to do the same with the people that surround me. The more you provide support to others, the more contagious it becomes. It ripples throughout, inspiring individuals to do the same."

  • It’s 2000. First EOD training. Final test. First demolition task. It's a live PMN-2, for many of us seen for the first time. Supervised by the instructor, we follow steps learned over preceding weeks. Charge placed, detonator inserted, safety fuse ignited. We need to make our way back to the firing point. Every instinct urges us to run fast. Standard procedures had big bold 'DO NOT RUN!' directive, you may trip and fall in the danger radius. We need to pass the test. We look at the instructor, he doesn't run, he walks. We walk with him. We arrive at the firing point, countdown begins: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.... Smoke comes first, followed by a loud bang, then falling debris and earth. We are excited. We are tired. The mine is gone. We passed the test. All 16 of us. And so began our new journey, #togetheragainstmines

    #MineAction #IMAD2024

  • "My story of how I ended up working in mine action begins in Geneva when I was working at the Italian permanent mission. I was the focal point for GICHD, and I had a running joke with Stefano (GICHD’s Director). When we would meet to discuss funding among other topics, he’d say with a smile that 1 million Euros would be a good amount. I'd respond jokingly, ‘If I can secure 1 Million Euros in funding for the GICHD, can you get me a job there?!’.

For a long time, I worked on disarmament issues from Geneva, focused mainly on weapons of mass destruction: nuclear, biological, some chemical. I found the meetings intellectually interesting — like watching a game of chess. Although stimulating, I acknowledged they felt removed from everyday life.

I distinctly remember one of the GICHD speeches at the Mine Action National Directors Meeting. The speaker described in depth the relationship between mine action and broader efforts. This idea that mine action is an enabler for something much larger, has stuck with me since then.

So...I didn’t end up generating 1 million in funding, but I did end up getting a job with the GICHD. Soon after I started, I was in Ethiopia speaking with a regional conference meeting participant. They asked me how long I had been working, and when I told them that it had been four weeks since I started, they said “wow, from the way you speak, it sounds like you’ve been there forever”. That was a touching moment for me as it’s when I realised this role was right for me. I would be able to represent the GICHD and be proud to do so.

If I didn’t believe my job would help at least one person in their daily life, I wouldn’t be doing this — I'd be baking, then selling cakes all day. When I collaborate with national authorities, it reminds me that in some way, I'm part of a much bigger machine that helps people.s me that in some way, I'm part of a much bigger machine that helps people." -Silvia #TogetherAgainstMines #IMAD2024

  • "Navigating the ammunition management sector, I frequently find myself as the youngest and one of the few women present, encountering biases that challenge my credibility. Often mistaken for a secretary, I continuously assert my capabilities to demonstrate my rightful place. Over time, however, my experience and contributions are not only recognised but valued, paving the way for greater inclusion within the sector.

My supervisor, Jovi, has been instrumental in my journey, championing women's empowerment every step of the way. Under her guidance, I feel supported and confident, even in male-dominated spaces, fostering a sense of belonging and self-assurance in my abilities. As a strong and knowledgeable leader, she creates environments where everybody feels empowered to speak and is treated as equals. In addition to Jovi’s expertise, I also learn soft skills from her - effortlessly balancing between the professional and building connection, which seems very natural, but probably takes many years to hone.

Back in law school, a professor often emphasised, “The key to your success is your curiosity”, and lately, I’ve found myself reflecting on those words. What propels me forward in my journey of development and professional growth is the supportive environment that encourages my curiosity and interest in exploring the links and connections between ammunition management and broader global agendas, such as international humanitarian law, Resolution 1325 and human rights." -Anna

  • "It felt strange to be walking along the same hiking trail tourists took to reach the Annapurna Circuit, a trek within the mountain ranges of central Nepal. While they turned left, me and my team went the other way towards the mine fields. In 2008, I took over the @un_mineaction programme in #Nepal.

At the time, it was part of a peace support mission. After the Nepali Civil War, a protracted armed conflict between the Government of Nepal and the Communist Party of Nepal — and its associated Maoist military organisation — each ‘side’ were to clear landmines and destroy explosive remnants of war. As part of the peace agreement, the Maoist military were to destroy their stock of improvised explosive devices and components and, at the same time, the Nepali military were to clear around fifteen mine fields, which they had laid during the ten-year conflict.

Initially, when I arrived, a commercial demining company had been contracted to clear the mine fields. I knew that the Nepali army were very well trained, so we got agreement from my boss in New York to develop the capacity of the Nepali military to clear the mine fields. As the peace process moved on, the mine action team transitioned out of the peace keeping mission and into the UN country programme.

This transition led to a UN first — UNMAS and UNICEF in Nepal joined forces, forming UNMAT Nepal ‘United Nations Mine Action Team’. You can see the UNMAT logo in photograph of our car, a fun relic from the first and I think the only time a UN mine action team had been branded. Together we achieved what had to be done. It was Christmas eve 2009 when I got the message from one of my team members to tell me that they had destroyed the final IED components, followed by the news a couple of years later that all minefields had been cleared." -Steve

  • "Stepping foot in Geneva was a complete culture shock, worlds away from the scorching heat and humidity of Juba. I dusted off my suit and tie, attire that rarely made an appearance in Juba where I had worked for UNMAS South Sudan for a year, and entered the NDM as a wide-eyed and eager newcomer to the mine action sector.

I was blown away! The grandeur of the plenary sessions, with country nameplates adorning the long tables, the interpreters gracefully perched in their elevated booths, and the awe-inspiring panellists and speakers effortlessly switching between languages. But that wasn't all! The side events were equally impressive. Experts and experienced voices sharing their insights on various topics, sometimes using terms that left me scratching my head. But I soaked it all in and learned so much!

However, the real stars of the NDM were the incredible individuals I had the privilege of meeting from all corners of the sector. Their unwavering passion and dedication, their vast expertise and experience, and above all, their kindness and humanity. They left an indelible mark on me, igniting a newfound excitement and motivation to bring back everything I had learned to South Sudan.

Fast forward to today, over a decade later, and I couldn't be more thrilled to be part of the team organizing this extraordinary global gathering of the mine action sector, and look forward welcoming over 700 mine action colleagues to Geneva." -Sasha Logie

  • "I work with words. Policy. The law. It can get frustrating at times because it can feel like you’re not getting anywhere, and if you are, it’s at an extremely slow pace.

My story of how I ended up working in mine action begins in Geneva when I was working at the Italian permanent mission.

For a very long time, I worked on disarmament issues on activities in and around Geneva. My work focused mainly on weapons of mass destruction: nuclear, biological, some chemical. Whenever I went to these meetings, I found them intellectually very interesting — it was like watching a game of chess. But despite finding them stimulating, I also acknowledged that they felt very remote and removed from everyday life.

What drew me to GICHD was that the area of work is very concrete, there is a lot of substance. I distinctly remember one of the GICHD speeches at the 2016 International Meeting of Mine Action National Directors and United Nations Advisers (NDM). The speaker described in depth, and very concisely, the relationship between mine action and broader efforts. This idea that mine action is an enabler for something so much larger, has stuck with me since then.

So...I didn’t end up generating 1 million in funding, but I did end up getting a job with the GICHD. Not much more than a month after my first day, I was in Ethiopia speaking with a regional conference meeting participant.

When I collaborate with national authorities, it reminds me that in some way, I'm part of a much bigger machine that helps people." -Silvia Cattaneo

  • Yesterday marked the International Mine Awareness Day where we honor the efforts of the international community to mitigate the threats posed by landmines and other remnants of war.

I had the opportunity to visit Bucha on that day, the village that became sadly famous for one of the worst massacres the war in Ukraine has seen so far. It was a stark reminder for me of the devastating impact war has on local communities; the atrocities committed in this region left me speechless. To see for myself the grief reverberating still after the fighting was a deeply moving, emotional experience. The memorial was inaugurated by President Zelensky a few days ago and bears witness to the trauma and suffering of those in Bucha.

    International Humanitarian Law enshrines the considerations for humane practices and for the intentionality towards sustainable human security. The International Humanitarian Law;
❗️Prohibits the deliberate attack of non-combatants (civilians)
❗️Prohibits the use of certain inhumane weapons especially LANDMINES

🌎April 4: International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action brings light to the humanitarian pillars of mine action and the people-centered operations of United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) , Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), MAG (Mines Advisory Group), Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention and the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC in remediating mine-incurred human suffering.

♿️Post mine explosions, the survivors commonly suffer permanent disability consequentially facing ostracization and certain economic limitations.
The Security Council Resolution 2475 makes provision for the needs and rights of all mine survivors with disabilities in conflict settings. The adoption of the Resolution seeks to promote gender-responsive victim assistance in humanitarian specialized services to facilitate recovery of victims and their reintegration, notably encouraging State parties to adhere to the obligations under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in all their state-centric initiatives.

  • Nigeria is still suffering the devastation of armed conflicts, notably in the Northeast, exposing countless lives to the threat posed by explosive contamination. Nigeria also recorded the second-highest of improvised explosive device (IED) incidents globally over the past three years.

Borno State recorded the highest number of incidents and casualties. At the core of humanitarian mine action activities is the goal to protect lives, build peace, and promote safety and security for people to thrive.

Youths Awaken Foundation (YAF) and other humanitarian mine action actors have been making efforts to provide effective, relevant, and targeted explosive ordnance risk education (EORE) and other risk reduction measures to protect lives and build peace. We have also made remarkable efforts in providing assistance for the care and rehabilitation, and reintegration of explosive ordnance incidents victims.

The International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is a call that beacons on all relevant stakeholders to reaffirm our commitment and unwavering dedication to reducing EO-related accidents, promoting support for victims, and fostering an environment conducive to economic and social development, free from the looming threat of EO contamination.

  • 🌍 Today we celebrate #MinesAwarenessDay.

Back in 1995, 🇧🇪 Belgium was the first country in the world to forbid anti-personnel mines because of the indiscriminate and long-lasting harm caused by them.
As a signatory of the Ottawa convention regarding the elimination of these weapons, the country still supports global demining efforts through initiatives such as awareness campaigns, funding, and partnerships with organizations dedicated to this essential humanitarian cause.

🤝 In its development cooperation program for 2022-2026 for 🇰🇭 Cambodia, Belgium reaffirmed its support to clearing the country from mines. ⛑Our partner on the ground, Apopo, which works closely with Cambodian Mines Action Center (CMAC), is using dogs and rats to speed up the process. It allows the local community to use the land safely and will help the development of tourism in the neighbouring temples of Koh Ker and Preah Vihear.

Incredible progress has been made today, with 15 out of the country's 25 provinces fully demined. This is a significant milestone that demonstrates the effectiveness of the joint efforts of Cambodia and organizations dedicated to this cause. However, we remain firmly committed to the goal of making Cambodia a mine-free country. Cambodia will host the 5th Review Conference of the Ottawa Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention in Siem Reap in November 2024.

Together, let's make our world a safer place, free from the threat of landmines 💪

  • "It was a rigorous two-week training, we would start at eight in the morning. It was intense. I’ve been participating in Arab Regional Cooperation Programme training for mine action, and the most inspiring training I have been to was by far on Gender Diversity Equality and Inclusion in Lebanon — every participant had a voice.

It struck me as in my previous experiences, I noticed the widely known misconception that mine action is a male dominated field. While there, I observed countless expert women from the region. There was confidence. They know what they’re talking about. It showed me that, no! — mine action is no longer a male dominated field, and the stereotypes are no more! There is still a way to go, however having the element of a common language played a huge part in this experience for me. This factor broke the ice for everyone.

For those two weeks, I listened to participants from Lebanon, Yemen, Libya, Mauritania, and other countries in the region, exchanging with each other using common references, cultural background, history, language, which naturally created a safe and trusting environment. By providing the know-how in the local language of the region, if this means conducting a training in the local language, or translating a resource in the local language such as an IMAS, then this is seen as a gem. Language is an important factor for building trust with our stakeholders in the region. No matter how much we translate, there are things which will be lost in translation. The original which is not if your language will always be the second-best option." #TogetherAgainstMines

  • Under the global theme “Protecting Lives, Building Peace”, for the International Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, Youths Awaken Foundation underscores the necessity to protect people from the looming threat posed by explosive hazards in Northeast Nigeria.

The protection landscape in northeastern Nigeria presented a grim reality, marred by a complex interplay of factors that significantly heightened the vulnerability of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities. Explosive ordnance contamination continues to posed significant threat to the lives and livelihood of people.

In response to the crisis, Youths Awaken Foundation and other relevant mine action actors continues to strengthen protection environment for conflict-affected communities through the provision of explosive ordnance risk education and inclusion of victims of explosive ordnance incidents through comprehensive Victim Assistance initiatives, fostering their physical, psychological, and economic recovery.

Youths Awaken Foundation wishes to cease this opportunity to advocate for greater awareness among all relevant stakeholders to reaffirm our commitment and unwavering dedication to promoting support for victim’s assistance, disability inclusion for affected persons, and fostering an environment conducive to economic and social development, free from the looming threat of explosive contamination.

  • This year for Mine Action Awareness day (4 April -- I know it's tomorrow!), I've been thinking about farmers and families in Uganda. There are over 900,000 refugees from South Sudan living in Uganda. I've had the privilege to work with farming communities in Uganda, near refugee camps that many South Sudanese people pass through or stay in as they enter the northern part of Uganda. Many of these refugees find themselves working on farms. This part of the country relies heavily on agriculture and many people living there still feel the effects of violence -- both from the civil war in Uganda and the on-going conflict in South Sudan.

I remember a warm afternoon sitting under a huge tree talking to a young man named Roger. After training to be a mechanic he was working and, in his free time, mentoring 14 other children and young people to get an education. He told me he wanted to start his own foundation. It was not the first time I was surprised by someone with a generous spirit and incredible amount of energy -- but the amount he was already doing on his own really stuck with me.

What does this have to do with humanitarian mine action? Well, over 70% of Ugandans rely on farming to make a living. As I was working for 6 years in agriculture, human rights and development, I didn't think about my work as contributing to mine action, because it didn't -- not directly, at least. But as I've been reflecting about working "Together against Mines", I can't help but think how crucial it is for farmers in places like Hoima, like Gulu, like Adjumani, to know their fields are safe to cultivate, to have a safe path for their children to go to school; how important it is that refugees in these farming areas can be integrated and feel safe after leaving EO-contaminated areas.

I know it's repeated and repeated, but in places where people are fleeing conflict, places where refugees find a new home, places still affected by EO and the memory of violence even when conflicts quiet down, we can't separate the work of mine action and sustainable development. It's been two years since I joined the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and I'm proud to be supporting all those working in mine action and everyone working in EO affected countries. Thanks today and everyday to those working #TogetherAgainstMines. I hope you'll share your stories, too.

  • Today, we reaffirm our unfailing support for the fight against anti-personnel mines, indiscriminate weapons that still cause too many victims around the world.

The environmental and social externalities associated with mines are of severe concern. Unfortunately, the number of victims has increased in recent years, in particular due to improvised explosive devices used mainly by non-state actors.

Belgium is proud to contribute to the un_mineaction which supports organisations like herorats that use rats for detecting landmines.

  • ✨Today is the 19th anniversary of the International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

🌎 In 2005, the United Nations designated this day to raise awareness of unexploded ordnance and support for reducing their global impact.

🇱🇦Laos is one of the countries affected by unexploded bombs, and We have safely destroyed over 350,000 unexploded bombs and turned 130,000,000 sqm of safe land for the people of Laos.

🤝Let’s unite and ensure a world free from the threat of mines and UXO. Together, we can change lives and make a lasting impact!

  • "It felt strange to be walking along the same hiking trail tourists took to reach the Annapurna Circuit, a trek within the mountain ranges of central Nepal. While they turned left, me and my team went the other way towards the mine fields. In 2008, I took over the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) programme in Nepal.

It was Christmas eve 2009 when I got the message from one of my team members to tell me that they had destroyed the final IED components, followed by the news a couple of years later that all minefields had been cleared." -stephen robinson
